German furniture designer, Kai Fuhrmann, founded MFM (Master Furniture Makers LLC) in 2001 in Portland, Oregon. Growing up on Germany's Baltic coastline, with its white sandy beaches, elegant sailboats and Gothic buildings, he quickly developed a growing love for building and design. He initially trained as a joiner at the Handwerks und Bauschule (School of Arts & Crafts), in Rostock, Germany graduating in 1993.
In the years that followed his skills in joinery and aesthetic sense flourished during his apprenticeship under master furniture maker Olaf Wirth. In 1995 he was awarded a Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft scholarship to study architecture abroad. Also studying engineering in Sacramento, California, he finally made Portland his permanent home in 1999.
Kai's work has been seen in many publications and he continues to pursue challenging commissions while preserving the craft by offering apprenticeships.
